Art classes at Spencer Loomis got off to a great start this year. The entire school was involved with a fundraiser. Every child created a piece of art that could be purchased on various items of their choice. Everyone was given a free magnet.

First grade finished their clay leaves and glazed them with real ceramic glaze. Currently they are working on the sky at night creating amazing work of the earth, planets and various things one might see in the night sky.

Second grade looked at a picture of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Russia. They created colorful buildings and structures incorporating the characteristic onion domes of that cathedral. Currently they are working on fanciful mardi gras masks.

Third grade completed a discovery watercolor project. They also completed a collage project in the style of Pablo Picasso. Their next project will be influenced by Edvard Munch’s artwork, The Scream.

Fourth grade created beautiful coil pots and glazed them with ceramic glaze. Classes have also started a still life drawing of a bicycle, paying attention to positive and negative shapes.

Fifth grade selected their musical instrument as the subject of their art work. The final project was drawn with oil pastels and enhanced with musical notes collaged onto the picture. Fifth grade is looking forward to their next project, clay masks.

Art parents presented the artists Wassily Kandinsky and Edvard Munch.
