Animal Scavenger Hunt
Grade: First
Subject: Science
Curricular Goal: Meets First Grade District Objective for Categorizing
Animals
Introduction:
To set the stage for our animal unit and to motivate our students, the first
part of our introduction activity involves gathering the students as a whole
group and asking them a series of animal riddles. We could begin by
saying: "Today we will be starting a new unit on animals. I
want you to listen carefully to these riddles and se if you can guess each
animal." An example of a riddle: "walk on four legs.
I eat plants. I have a long neck. What am I?" a
giraffe." Students will make up their own riddles later in the unit.
After the whole group riddles, we will divide he class into six groups ( to
represent the six animals groups we learn about.) They will have to
identify and and collect pictures of animals in their group. As we learn
about the different habitats throughout our study, students can place these
pictures in the appropriate habitats set up in our rooms.
Task:
We do a huge integrated animal unit in first grade at Isaac Fox. Our main
objective of this unit is for the student to be able to categorize species as
amphibian, reptile, mammal, bird, or insect. Additionally, we what student
s to recognize various animals and their habitats. Throughout this unit,
each class decorates their room to show the different habitats and what they've
learned out each. At the end of this unit, parents are invited in for a
spring open house to see students' work displayed throughout the room. A
slideshow is also exhibited as a way of showing how technology is being
integrated into learning.

Process:
1. Make a book on Animal Groups. Draw an animal under each category
( mammals, bird, fish, reptiles and amphibians )
Take a virtual tour of the zoo.
* Chester Zoo
* Brevard
Zoo
* The Cyber Zoo Mobile
* Electronic
Zoo
2. Divide the children into 4 groups. Each one assigned to research
a habitat. ( Desert, Ocean, Forest, Polar ) Each group will design a mural
that reflects what they learned.
* Habitat & Species Internet
Resources Collection
* Oregon
Coast Aquarium
3. Create a class animal habitat slide show on Kid Pix
Studio. Save it to a disc. Have it playing on the monitor for the
parents to view
during Open House.

Conclusion:
At the Spring Open House in May, students will show their parents around the
room for the culminating activity. When they walk around, parents will be
able to view students; work that has been completed and collected throughout the
course of this unit. The children will be tour guides and will be responsible
for showing their parents around the room. The kids and parents will be
interacting with the displays as well as viewing the slide show that will be
exhibited.
