Landscape Artists WebQuest

Art Grade:  9-12
Subject:  Art
Curricular Goal:  Students will draw inference and conclusions between 17th century and 20th century landscape artists.

Introduction:

The subjects of landscapes in art vary from artist to artist, century to century.  They can range from paintings of mythological allegories to black and white photographs of stark realism.  The choice of subject depends upon what kind of investigation the artists wish to explore.

No matter what subject artists choose to depict, the one commonality they all share is that of the world surrounding them.  Landscapes are not just a reflection of reality, but also of how the artist interpret it.

Task:

Pretend that you work for the Art Institute of Chicago as an art collector.  The museum curator has asked you to take charge of the upcoming "Landscape Gallery."  Your job is to look for at least 5 landscapes from 5 different epoch using a variety of art media.

Process:

You need to write down the following information about the landscapes you find:

        1.  The name of the artist
        2.  Their nationality
        3.  When the landscape was done
        4.  What period/movement of art does it represent (i.e. Romanticism, Post-Impressionism, etc.)
        5.  What medium is it in (i.e. oil paint, photography, etc.)
        6.  Where is the artwork located
        7.  Write a short description of the landscape (What is the setting of the piece?
What is the atmosphere?  What size is the piece?)

You will also need a full-color copy of the landscapes you select.
