Grade: 6
Subject: Science
Curricular Goal: Students will  identify ancient astronomers and their discoveries using technology resources.

Introduction:

Astronomy is the study of the stars, planets, and other objects that make up the universe. Astronomers observe the locations and motions of heavenly bodies. Beginning around 600 BC, Greek philosophers and scientists developed a number of important astronomical ideas. The early Greek astronomers knew many of the geometrical relationships of the heavenly bodies.

Task: Students will discover....

    1. What is the history of astronomy?
    2. What tools did ancient astronomers use?
    3. Who discovered that the Earth orbits the Sun?
    4. Who was the first person to prove that the Earth rotates?
    5. Who was the first person to explain why the sun and stars move across the sky?
    6. Who was the first person to developed three laws regarding planetary motion?
    7. What are the laws of planetary motion?
    8. Why did ancient civilizations consider astronomy to be important?
    9. Make a list of astronomers and their discoveries/theories in a time-line format.

Process:

   * Choose a partner / define your roles.
    * Using the web sites listed below, search for information.
    * Anwser the task questions to help you with your time-line.
    * Create a time-line
Include on your time-line the following information:
        astronomers name
        date of discovery
        what was discovered
        tool used
     * Be sure to use some graphics and pictures on your time-line.

Resources:

You might want to consult some of the following web sites:

 Ancient Astronomers
 Ancient Astronomers Nasa

The Brief History of Astronomy

Evaluation:

Your time-line will be evaluated as follows :
Accurate information
Logical sequence of events
Colorful pictures or graphics
Neatness and overall appearance

   Advanced (Grade A)

  •       10 to 12 astronomers, date of discovery, what was discovered, and tools.
  • Satisfactory (Grade B)
  •
  •     7 to 9 astronomers, date of discovery, what was discovered, and tools.
  • Beginning (Grade C)
  •         4 to 6 astronomers, date of discovery, what was discovered, and tools.

  •

    Conclusion:

The webquest activity will provide an overview of astronomical discoveries, as well as ancient astronomers and their contributions.  Students will have a better understanding of how to use the internet through the use of astronomy webquest.
