Grade: 4-8
Subject: Instrumental Music (Band and Orchestra)
Curricular Goal: Students find historical information about their instruments.

Introduction:

Which is older? the saxophone or the violin?

Does the flute get played in every country?

Did the trumpet always look like it does now?

We all wonder about the origin of our instruments. Whatever instrument you play, you can learn more about it through this WebQuest.

Task:

This WebQuest will guide you to information about the history of your instrument. At the conclusion of the quest, you will turn in a disk with answers to given questions about your instrument, a picture of your instrument and a MIDI file of a piece written for your instrument.

Process:
The process you will use is as follows:

1) You will be assigned a group of two or three students

2) Find your instrument on list of given websites

3) Go to websites for your instrument

4) Find information on:

a- Questions

b - Pictures

c - MIDI files

5) Download one picture and one MIDI file to your disk

6) Save work as "YOURNAME-WEBQUEST"

7) Answer questions below on a word processing document

a - Name one person who was important in the development of this instrument

b - Name two composers who have written music for this instrument

c - Find one instrument that was a predecessor of the modern version of your instrument

d - Name one current professional performer on your instrument

8) Save work

9) Turn in disk

The group will receive one grade based on completion of entire assignment with accurate answers to questions and an appropriate downloaded MIDI file.

 

Conclusion:
By completing the WebQuest, you will have gained insight into the history of your instrument, and will have learned about past and present musicians who have played your instrument. For further enjoyment and study, look at the websites for other instruments in the same family.
