My Side of the Mountain

Introduction:
Have you ever imagined yourself lost in the woods? Could you survive on your own? Here's a chance for you to test your skills! What would you put in your survival kit? Sam lasted for one year. Could you last for one month?

Task:
You are going to create a trifold display. In this trifold, you will create a map of the Catskill Mountain area. You will develop a written document describing the plant and animal life, physical features, climate, and natural resources found in this area. Using the information found, you will design a survival kit necessaary to live in this area for one week.

Process:
l. Section One: Map

Use any source to develop a map of the Catskill Mountain Region. Include on your map landforms, latitude and longitude, major cities, and at least five natural resources found in this area. Be sure to include a title, legend (key), scale of miles and compass rose.

2. Section Two: Research

By using the links provided under resources, show some examples of the following and provide a brief description of each:

bulletpossible sources of danger

3. Section Three: Survival Kit

Using everything you have learned, create a survival kit that includes the necessary items to survive for one month. Remember that Sam brought only five items. He survived off the land. You will be limited to only items that you can carry. Be creative in how you show this section of your trifold!

Evaluation:
Your trifold will be assessed using the attached rubric.

Conclusion:
You will be expected to present your trifold to the class. Be prepared to justify the items in your survival kit. Your class will vote on the chances of your survival as strong, moderate or weak.
