Can You Survive?

Introduction:

You are trying out for an elite army special forces unit.  To qualify for the unit you must prove your survival skills.

As a test of your survival skills, you've been deposited in a completely unfamiliar environment.  You are unaware of where you are, but you are sure you're in a remote location.  You also know that a box of supplies from been left with you, but you know that you can not carry the entire box of supplies.  You decide that you are only going to take 7 items from the box with you.
 

You don't know where you are, what the dangerous are, or how long you will be here.  Yet, you do know Somehow you MUST SURVIVE!!

Suddenly, you recall that you were given an envelope before you were deposited.  You reach into your pocket and relieved to find it still there.  You have been told that the envelope will give your instructions.

You open the envelop and unfold the piece of paper you find inside....

You are at ######## longitude and ######## latitude.  You must make it to ######## longitude and ######## latitude and you have two weeks to do it.  GOOD LUCK!!!!


Task:

Your will need to use the the resources list below to...
bullet    Identify your location and the location of where you need to get to.
bullet    Identify the dangerous that you may encounter:
bullet Both physical dangers (such as:  weather, wildlife, environmental).
bullet And political dangers (such as: warring nations/tribes).

bullet    Identify the items from the box that you will take with you.
bullet    Identify one person you would want to be with you during all of this.


Process:

To accomplish your mission follow the steps below:

  1. First, you will be paired with a partner.  The two of you will act as one person stranded.  The two of you need to make choices so that you have the best chance for survival.  Remember that you are in the wilderness so disaster can strike at any time.
  2. Using the information in your envelop you must determine your location and place.
  3. Now that you know where you are, where do you have to get to?
  4. Once you are sure of where you are, you need to access your surroundings.  What are your immediate surroundings?  What are your immediate dangers?  How will you meet your basic needs (food, water, clothing, shelter)?
  5. What items from the box will you take with you (remember you can only take 7, and remember you will be hiking for some distance)?  You need to research the items to determine which are best for your situation.
  6. With your partner, determine one other person you would like to have with you and why you would take that person with you.
  7. Finally, with your partner create a poster following the following format:

Conclusion:

Your partner and yourself have used your wits, your knowledge, the internet, books, and each other in an attempt to increase your chance of survival in a strange land.  You have had to make compromises, do research, evaluate information, synthesize information from various sources, and work together as a team to accomplish your task.
