Tornado Quest

INTRODUCTION:

You are a citizen in the small town of Parkville, located in the Midwest, which has been hit by a
tornado. The mayor wants you to be on a committee to develop a safety plan for the city. 10 people were killed and the estimated damage to the city is $______________. How does this compare to the top 10 tornadoes in the United States? How could Parkville be more prepared for this great disaster? This committee will answer this question and a whole lot more.

TASK:

Your job on this committee is to research:

  1. tornado facts
  2. history of past most deadly tornadoes
  3. safety precautions regarding tornadoes

Once the research has been done and compiled, the committee will develop an educational safety brochure.

You will work in a group of three to complete this project. Five class periods will be allotted to work on this project. If additional time is needed to complete this project, your group will be responsible to do so outside of class time.

The following list suggests steps you and your group can take to complete the project.

  1. Explore the different web links to get an idea/feeling for the power of a tornado.

  2. Determine who will do the research on history, tornado facts, and safety procedures.

  3. Using the information found on the internet and other sources, come back to the committee and report your findings. Discuss how the brochure will be created (see product descriptor).

  4. Produce the brochure to share with the class later.
