Eric Carle's Animals

Grade: First Grade
Subject: Language Arts/Science
Curricular Goal: Classifying Animals

Introduction:

Lets go to the library today.  We are going to look for Eric Carle books.  Lets see if Eric Carle has any stories about animals.

Task:

After researching Eric Carles work will:
-  make a list of the animals he has written about
-  discuss how they are alike and different
-  put them into groups of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish
-  make a mobile for display in the library

Process:

To accomplish this task we will:
-  visit the Eric Carle site
-  use Eric Carle books available in the library
-  chart the animals into their groups

Evaluation:

After looking at the Eric Carle books in the library and using the web site, children will be able to group the animals.
They will be evaluated on:
-  brainstorming likes/differences
-  grouping of animals species
-  working cooperatively
-  neat finished mobile of animal groups
-  common grade will be given to the students

Conclusion:

That was a great trip we had to the library with Eric Carle.  We learned so much about putting animals into groups.  We also learned that Eric Carle enjoys creating books about animals.  Perhaps you might enjoy your own investigation of another author/illustrator.
