"Sex" and the Single Cell
WebQuest
Grade: 9-12
Subject: Biology
Curricular Goal: To understand the process of mitosis.
Introduction:
You are a scientist who wants to discover how a cell reproduces.

Task:
1. Identify the method/name of simple cellular reproduction
2. Be able to identify the various stages of cellular reproduction
3. Identify and explain the role of the various parts of a cell
responsible for cellular reproduction
4. Understand the importance of cellular reproduction
5. Understand the end result(s) of cellular reproduction
6. Differentiate between a plant and animal cell while undergoing
cellular reproduction

Process:
1. You will be working in groups of 2
2. Construct a diagram/label the various stages of cellular
reproduction in both a plant and animal cell
3. Explain the processes that are occurring during each stage of
cellular respiration
4. Present your findings to the class in a 10 minute oral presentation

Resources:
1. Cell
Division Tutorial
2. Timeline of
Mitosis
3. Onion
Root Tip Mitosis
4. Mitosis and the Cell Cycle
5. Whitefish Cell
Mitosis

Evaluation:
You will be evaluated based upon the following:
1. Properly naming
simple cell reproduction
2. Being able to explain,
using your diagrams and research, the following:
A. Stages of cellular reproduction in a plant cell and an animal cell
B. What is occurring in each stage of cellular reproduction in a plant cell and an animal
cell
C. The end result(s) of cellular reproduction in a plant cell and an animal cell
D. The importance of cellular reproduction in a plant cell and an animal cell
E. Any questions about your project

Conclusion:
After you have completed this project, you should completely understand
the importance of cellular reproduction in both plants and animals.
