College Search
WebQuest
Developed by the Lake Zurich High School Guidance
Department
Introduction:
You are a high school senior. Your parents will fund your college education at a
maximum rate of $15,000 a year for four years. This money can only be used for
tuition, books, housing, and fraternal organization fees. You may not keep any funds left
over at the end of the four years. You may attend any school in the continental
United States and not spend more than one semester abroad. You must also come home
for your winter break. Transportation costs are your own expense.

Task:
Your assignment is to select a college and a major. You must explain why you chose
that college, provide a budget for the four years, explain how any costs over the $15,000
will be met (You can incur your own debt.), and explain how that major will lead to
a marketable career. You must also provide two other school options and explain why
you rejected them.

Process:
You will be assigned to a group of three students.
You must create and fully describe the student for whom this will
be a viable plan. Give rank, ACT or SAT scores, GPA, kinds of courses, summer job, type of
school at which he would be comfortable in terms of size, location, affiliation,
etc. Be complete.
You must use at least three web sites and one College Resource
room source and document these at the end of your report.
You must:
You may use any of the comparison worksheets in your senior packet or
design your own.
Provide the costs, distance from home, etc. of each of the three
schools. (See above.)
Explain how any costs not met by your parents will be met.

Resources:

Evaluation: This will not be done
for a grade. This will be done as a small group guidance activity. About 5
small groups will each present their findings to each other. At the end of the
activity each group will describe one thing it could have done to improve its report.

Conclusion:
Explain your college selection and major choice and why. Be sure to summarize why
you chose the cost, location, and career opportunities, etc.
List your sources. Group your web sites together; then
group your other sources together.
