Branches of Government WebQuest

Grade: 4
Subject: Social Studies
Goal:   U.S. and Illinois Government

Introduction:
This search will enable you to learn about the three branches of government.

Task:
1.  You will travel to the following websites:  www.state.il.us/kids; more links are being researched
2.  Your final product will be a poster summarizing the task of each branch of government.
3.  Your group will present and explain their final product.

Process:
1.  You will be assigned to a team of four students in a group, two will be the Legislative Branch, one will be the Executive Branch, and one will be the Judicial Branch.
2.  You must respond to specific questions
        1.  Where do new laws originate?
        2.  Can a law passed by Congress become law without the signature of the President?
        3.  How many Senators are in the U.S. Senate?
        4.  How many Members are in the United States House of Representatives?
        5.  How many Justices serve on the U.S. Supreme Court?
        6.  How many Cabinet Officers serve in the President's Cabinet?

3.  After answering the questions, create a poster that demonstrates exactly the duties of your Branch.

Title: Name of specific branch.  Bold, Blue Lettering, Use ruled lines
Body: Include information in written or illustrated form that defines the task of your specific branch. Information must be presented so that it is easily understood by reader.  Use ruled lines and bold lettering.
Artwork: Illustrations or visual aids (pictures, charts, graphs)  from magazines, TFK, newspapers and other resources.

4.  Present your poster to the class.
        Product Descriptor:  Decide as a group how each will participate in the presentation.
                                          Look at your audience and speak in a clear and concise manner.
