"Continent Safari"

Grade: Second
Subject: Social Studies
Curricular Goal: identify and label continents on the globe; identify locations outside of the community; identify cultural similarities and differences; understand and utilize components of a map, key directions, and symbols; read diagrams

Introduction:
    You are helping a friendly alien from another planet who has come to investigate our world.  You are about to go on an Continent Safari to help the aliens discover the unique animals found all over the globe.  As you assist the aliens in researching the planet Earth, you have helped them to discover that there are seven bodies of land spread out across the planet.   Each continent has a different type of animal that you and your alien friend will learn about on your journey.

Task:
    Students will:
        1.  locate and identify the seven continents.
        2.  research and discover animals from the various continents.
        3.  write three facts about one animal from each continent.

Process:
    Using the internet, find the information that the friendly aliens need.  Write your information on the sheet provided in the appropriate spaces.

Resources:
    You will be using the internet to find information.  Click on the blue words below to find more information about the continents.  You may also use your social studies book to help you locate the seven continents.

Evaluation:
    Please complete the information sheet with the correct information required for each section.  Your handwriting should be neat with correct punctuation in your sentences.

Conclusion:
    You have now helped the aliens to discover the seven continents on the Earth and the various unique animals that dwell in those areas.
