Weather WebQuest

Grade: 2
Subject: Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Math
Curricular Goal:  See Second Grade Learner Objectives:  Reading:  #9,10,15,18,20, and 21.  Communication:  #3, 7,12,15, and 16.  Math:  #7, 8, 11, 14, 18, 19, 20, 22, and 24.  Science:  #1-5  Social Studies:  #1, 4, 12, and 13.

Introduction:

To introduce the children to various weather conditions around the world, the U.S.A., and Lake Zurich; to identify cloud types; and to compare our weather information and observations to that of CNN's weather information.

Task:

The children will become "weather watchers" on the Internet and meteorologists in the classroom as they learn about the various weather conditions around the world and in our area via the Web, maps, pictures, videos, and books.

Process:

First, the children will be introduced to the concept of weather by completed the K and the W of a       cloud-shaped K-W-L chart.

Read stories, poems, and sing songs related to weather.

bullet

Begin each lesson with bringing the children outside and having the class meteorologist report the weather using the class thermometer, anemometer, rain gauge, and direct observation.

Discuss findings and predict tomorrow's weather.

bullet

Record the temperature of the day and write a descriptive paragraph about the weather they observed that day.  The paragraph should include good activities for the day and how to dress.

Have class meteorologist for the day report daily weather and forecast tomorrow's weather on the intercom each morning.

bullet

Give students the task of finding weather-related articles via Web, newspaper, Weather Channel, news, etc. to bring in to class to share.

Evaluation:

We will evaluate the children through journaling, direct observation, anecdotal records,  and a  scored performance rubric.  Evaluations will be based on both individual assessments and cooperative group work.

Conclusion:

The children will have learned many different aspects of weather. We will ask them the following questions:

bullet"Why is weather important to us?"
bullet"Why is it helpful to be able to predict the weather?"
bullet"In what ways do weather and climate affect human needs and lifestyles?"
bullet"Describe the instruments we used in weather forecasting."
bullet"What is the difference between weather and climate?"
bullet"What are the three basic cloud formations?"
bullet"What did you do to help your group?"
bullet"What did you like most about this weather unit?"
bullet"Where did you find most of your information?"

Enrichment Activity:  This weather unit can lead to a greater understanding of severe weather conditions such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and their impact on people.  Contact UNICEF or any other relief organizations to involve your class in helping people suffering from a natural disaster.
