Introduction:
To introduce the children to various weather
conditions around the world, the U.S.A., and Lake Zurich; to identify cloud types; and to
compare our weather information and observations to that of CNN's weather information.

Task:
The children will become "weather
watchers" on the Internet and meteorologists in the classroom as they learn about the
various weather conditions around the world and in our area via the Web, maps, pictures,
videos, and books.

Process:
 | First, the children will be introduced to the concept of weather by
completed the K and the W of a cloud-shaped K-W-L
chart.
|
 | Read stories, poems, and sing songs related to weather.
|
 | Begin each lesson with bringing the children outside and having the
class meteorologist report the weather using the class thermometer, anemometer, rain
gauge, and direct observation.
|
 | Discuss findings and predict tomorrow's weather.
|
 | Record the temperature of the day and write a descriptive paragraph
about the weather they observed that day. The paragraph should include good
activities for the day and how to dress.
|
 | Have class meteorologist for the day report daily weather and
forecast tomorrow's weather on the intercom each morning.
|
 | Give students the task of finding weather-related articles via Web,
newspaper, Weather Channel, news, etc. to bring in to class to share.
|

Resources:

Evaluation:
We will evaluate the children through
journaling, direct observation, anecdotal records, and a scored performance
rubric. Evaluations will be based on both individual assessments and cooperative
group work.

Conclusion:
The children will have learned many
different aspects of weather. We will ask them the following questions:
 | "What did we learn about weather?"
(Finish KWL at this point) |
 | "Why is weather important to us?" |
 | "Why is it helpful to be able to predict
the weather?" |
 | "In what ways do weather and climate
affect human needs and lifestyles?" |
 | "Describe the instruments we used in
weather forecasting." |
 | "What is the difference between weather
and climate?" |
 | "What are the three basic cloud
formations?" |
 | "What did you do to help your
group?" |
 | "What did you like most about this
weather unit?" |
 | "Where did you find most of your
information?" |
Enrichment Activity: This weather unit can lead to a greater understanding of
severe weather conditions such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and their impact on
people. Contact UNICEF or any other relief organizations to involve your class in
helping people suffering from a natural disaster.
